In Gujarat, voters can use 14 different documents to vote in local body elections. This includes the voter ID card, which is the primary identification. The State Election Commission has confirmed the validity of these documents. Voters must present their photo identification at polling stations. This identification helps confirm their identity and eligibility to vote.
The local body voter lists are prepared based on the Assembly voter lists. The Election Commission of India provides photo identification cards, known as EPIC, to voters in the state. This card must be shown at the polling station on election day. If a voter cannot present their EPIC, they can use alternative documents accepted by the State Election Commission.
The 14 valid documents include:
1. Passport with photo
2. Driving license with photo (issued one month before the election date)
3. PAN card with photo
4. Government-issued photo ID from public enterprises or companies
5. Passbook with photo issued by public sector banks and post offices (issued one month before the election)
6. Certificate with photo from competent authority for SC/ST/OBC (issued one month before the election)
7. Pension certificates with photo, like those for ex-servicemen or elderly individuals (issued one month before the election)
8. Photo ID card for freedom fighters issued by the central or state government
9. Firearm license with photo (issued one month before the election)
10. Disability certificate with photo from competent authority (issued one month before the election)
11. Job card with photo under the MNREGS (issued one month before the election)
12. Employee State Insurance (ESI) photo ID card (issued one month before the election)
13. Smart card issued under the National Population Register (NPR) scheme
14. Aadhaar card issued by UIDAI
These documents ensure that voters can easily verify their identity at polling stations. This move aims to facilitate smooth voting and encourage higher participation in local elections. It is crucial for voters to be aware of these options and prepare the necessary documents ahead of election day.
In summary, the State Election Commission has made it easier for voters in Gujarat to participate in local body elections by accepting various forms of identification. This initiative helps maintain the integrity of the electoral process and ensures that every eligible voter can cast their vote without hassle. Voters are encouraged to check if they have the required documents ready and to understand the importance of their participation in local governance.
