Abhayam 181: A Lifeline for Women in Gujarat

The Abhayam 181 helpline has been a vital service for women in Gujarat for the past ten years. Launched in March 2015, it aims to provide immediate assistance to women facing various crises, including domestic violence, harassment, and other forms of abuse. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government has made significant strides in ensuring women’s safety.

In the last decade, over 1.6 million women have utilized the helpline, receiving much-needed support during difficult times. The helpline is not just a phone number; it represents hope and empowerment for women in distress. More than 273,000 women have downloaded the Abhayam 181 mobile application, which allows them to access help quickly and efficiently.

The helpline operates 24/7, offering free services to women throughout the state. It has 59 rescue vans that respond promptly to emergencies. In Ahmedabad, 12 of these vans are part of the Safe City Project. The rescue vans are equipped with trained counselors who can provide immediate solutions to women’s problems at the scene.

In total, the rescue vans have assisted over 331,000 women, resolving many cases on-site. The helpline also plays a crucial role in addressing various issues, such as domestic violence, mental and physical abuse, stalking, and child marriage. Women can call the helpline to access information about local government services, including police support and legal assistance.

The Gujarat government has allocated over ₹37 crore for the helpline in the past three years, with plans to invest ₹15 crore in the 2025-26 budget. This commitment demonstrates the state’s dedication to enhancing women’s safety.

Moreover, the trained teams supporting the helpline collaborate with various agencies, including the Women’s and Child Development Department and emergency services. They are prepared to assist women in any situation by providing immediate rescue and guidance.

Abhayam 181 has become a symbol of security for women in Gujarat. It empowers them to seek help without fear or hesitation. This initiative signifies Gujarat’s progressive approach to women’s rights and safety, making it a model for other states in India and beyond.

The helpline addresses multiple issues, from cyber crimes to marital disputes, ensuring that women can find a swift resolution. With the seamless integration of technology, the helpline operates efficiently, ensuring that women in need can receive help at any time.

In conclusion, the Abhayam 181 helpline stands as a testament to Gujarat’s commitment to women’s empowerment. It is a lifeline that has transformed the lives of countless women, providing them with the support they need to overcome challenges and reclaim their lives.
