An incident in Navsari has highlighted the risks of overseas job scams. A couple fell victim to a fraudulent agent from Ahmedabad, losing a staggering ₹30 lakhs. The couple, lured by promises of jobs abroad, discovered the scam when they demanded their money back and were met with harsh words from the agent. The case has now reached the police, who have arrested the scammer, Viraj Patel, from Ahmedabad.
The allure of moving to countries like Canada, USA, Australia, and the UK has grown significantly among young people in Gujarat. In recent years, many have attempted to migrate, often falling prey to deceitful agents. The couple from Navsari was seeking a better life abroad but ended up paying a hefty price for their dreams.
Viraj Patel ran a fake agency called ‘Recover Overseas’ in Maninagar. He convinced the couple that he could help them secure jobs overseas. After making the payment, the couple realized they had been tricked when they tried to contact him for updates. Instead of assistance, they faced abusive language when they asked for their money back.
The Navsari Town Police have taken swift action, apprehending Patel and launching an investigation into the scam. They are also looking into any other potential victims of Patel’s fraudulent activities.
This is not the first incident of its kind. Earlier, a young man from Mehsana was also deceived by a different agent in Ahmedabad. The agent promised to send him to Canada and took ₹16.92 lakhs from him, but the young man never made it abroad. Despite waiting since 2019, he realized he had been cheated and filed a complaint against the agent named Darshan Nayak.
These cases serve as a warning to others considering overseas job offers. It is crucial to conduct thorough research and verify the legitimacy of agents before making any payments. Many people are desperate for better opportunities and may overlook warning signs, resulting in significant financial losses.
The police urge anyone who suspects they have been a victim of a similar scam to come forward. They are working diligently to investigate these cases and bring the fraudsters to justice. Potential victims are advised to be cautious and seek credible information before engaging with any overseas job services. Protecting oneself from such scams is essential, especially in a world where the dream of a better life can lead to dangerous paths.
