On June 14, 2025, Ahmedabad welcomed Rishabh Rupani, the son of late former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Vijay Rupani tragically passed away in a plane crash in Ahmedabad. His family decided to hold his last rites in Rajkot. After the DNA matching process was completed, family members made their way to Rajkot to pay their final respects.
In Rajkot, local businesses observed a half-day bandh to honour Rupani. Many private schools and municipal primary schools also closed their doors for the day. This act of solidarity reflected the deep sorrow felt throughout the city. Vijay Rupani had a significant impact on the business community during his time as Chief Minister. The funeral arrangements have been made for Vijay Rupani, with his body being displayed at his residence in Prakash Society on Nirmala Convent School Road. The final journey will commence from his home and proceed to the Ramnath Para cremation ground.
Rajkot’s business and education sectors have joined together to pay tribute to the former Chief Minister. Over 650 private schools and around 90 government schools in the city have suspended classes, demonstrating the collective respect for Rupani’s legacy. Vijay Rupani was born on August 2, 1956, in Yangon, Myanmar. His family moved to Rajkot in 1960. He started his political career as a student activist. Over the years, he held various positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), eventually becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021.
Rupani was known for his commitment to public service and his work to improve the lives of the people in Gujarat. He is survived by his wife, Anjali Rupani, and their children, Rishabh and Radhika. The family has faced personal tragedy with the loss of their youngest son, Pujit, in an accident, which led them to establish a charity in his memory.
As the news of his passing spread, condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Leaders from various parties visited his residence to offer their support to his grieving family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared heartfelt memories of working alongside Rupani, highlighting his dedication and hard work.
