In just seven months, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has successfully treated 500 patients suffering from kidney and urinary stones using lithotripsy. This non-invasive procedure breaks down stones without any cuts or surgeries. Dr. Shrenik Shah, head of the Urology Department, shared that 84% of patients had their stones completely removed in the first attempt. The remaining 16% required a second treatment. The patients ranged from 3 to 80 years old, with 340 men and 160 women among them.
Lithotripsy usually costs between ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 in private hospitals. However, at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, the treatment is available at a very low cost and is free for those with an Ayushman card. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, the Medical Superintendent, emphasized the importance of this service for patients who need help with kidney and urinary stones.
The urology department has seen remarkable results. Out of the 500 patients treated, 240 had stones in their kidneys, 135 had them in the upper part of the urinary tract, and 125 had stones in the upper ureter. All patients returned to their normal lives pain-free.
The lithotripsy treatment offers several benefits. There are no incisions made on the body, allowing for a quicker recovery. Patients can return to their daily activities within 1 to 2 hours after the procedure. The risks of pain, infection, and complications are significantly lower compared to traditional surgery.
