Ahmedabad district has successfully completed its water conservation efforts ahead of the rainy season. Under the Sujalam Sufalam water conservation campaign, a total of 125 ponds have been deepened over the last two years, increasing their water storage capacity by approximately 4.5 million cubic meters. This year alone, 43 ponds have been deepened. The district administration is working tirelessly to improve groundwater levels through the “Catch the Rain” initiative. This project has resulted in the construction of 44 water recharge structures at a total cost of about 15 million rupees. Additionally, the irrigation department plans to build 224 recharge wells during the year 2025, while around 200,000 trees have been planted by the forest department this year.
Various departments have been actively involved in the Sujalam Sufalam 2025 campaign. The water resources department has completed 101 projects, while the rural development department has executed 37 projects. The watershed agency has undertaken 14 projects, and the forest and environment department has completed one project. Local municipalities have also contributed by completing 46 projects, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has successfully finished 153 projects. In total, 398 projects have been completed under this campaign.
The Nal Khanta area and Bhal region in Ahmedabad district are primarily agricultural zones, where farmers rely on surface water for irrigation. Unfortunately, groundwater levels in the district are very low. Therefore, it is crucial to increase groundwater levels and store rainwater effectively.
The state government has implemented the Sujalam Sufalam campaign and the “Catch the Rain 2.0” initiative to store excess rainwater. The construction of check dams, deepening ponds in various villages, and planting trees are prioritized activities that have shown positive effects.
By taking timely and proactive measures for water conservation, the Ahmedabad district administration has exemplified the importance of water management. These efforts will not only help in storing rainwater but also uplift the groundwater levels, benefiting the farming community during the upcoming rainy season.
