In Ahmedabad, citizens are facing serious problems due to waterlogging after heavy rains. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) claims to focus on development, but many residents have reported issues with drainage. In June alone, there were over 31,000 complaints related to water accumulation, according to the Congress party. This includes about 28,000 complaints about the drainage system needing attention.
The leader of the Congress party in Ahmedabad, Shahzada Khan Pathan, mentioned that nearly 17,000 online complaints were filed specifically regarding water issues in June 2025. The complaints came from various zones, including 6,710 from the North zone, 6,180 from the Central zone, 5,038 from the West zone, and 4,825 from the South zone. These numbers suggest that the city’s drainage systems were not adequately cleaned before the monsoon season.
Currently, 498 agencies are working on de-silting in different zones of Ahmedabad. Each agency receives around ₹50,000 every month. However, the situation remains dire and raises questions about the effectiveness of these efforts. The Congress party is demanding immediate action to resolve the waterlogging problems.
Interestingly, the number of complaints is highest in certain zones, despite having numerous agencies working there. For example, there are 112 agencies in the North zone, 99 in the Central zone, 107 in the West zone, and 90 in the South zone. The high number of complaints indicates a lack of proper management.
Residents in areas like Rakhiyal, Maninagar, and Godasar have reported significant water accumulation. Many drivers got stuck in the flooded streets. Localities such as Khokhra and Vatva also experienced similar issues. After the heavy rains, residents faced difficulties getting around due to the flooded roads.
The heavy rainfall has caused extensive waterlogging in many areas, including Krishnanagar, Bapunagar, and Thakkar Nagar. Streets and homes in these regions were inundated, leading to a lot of distress among the residents. The rainfall not only caused inconvenience but also raised concerns about public safety.
Congress party officials argue that the ruling BJP’s claims of development are hollow, as the city suffers from these persistent waterlogging issues. They are urging the municipal corporation to take urgent corrective measures.
As the monsoon season continues, citizens hope for a swift resolution to the drainage problems. The situation highlights the need for better planning and management in urban infrastructure, especially in a city like Ahmedabad that faces heavy rainfall during this season.
