Ahmedabad Introduces Bag ATMs to Promote Eco-Friendly Practices

In a significant step towards environmental awareness, Ahmedabad has launched bag ATMs across the city. This initiative aims to reduce the use of plastic bags and promote the use of cloth bags. The project was inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on World Environment Day. Since the launch, over one lakh citizens have used cloth bags from these ATMs.

The bag ATMs provide a convenient way for people to obtain reusable cloth bags. They have been placed in 13 important religious sites across the state, including famous temples like Somnath and Dwarka. Visitors can get a bag by inserting a five or ten rupee coin or by scanning a QR code. This not only helps in promoting eco-friendly practices but also supports local women’s self-help groups, as the bags are sourced from them.

In just 200 days, the ATMs have distributed more than 20,000 cloth bags. This is part of a larger campaign called “Plastic-Free India,” which encourages citizens to be more responsible about their plastic use. The Chief Minister stated that the government is committed to reducing plastic waste and enhancing environmental consciousness among the public.

In addition to the temples, bag ATMs have been installed in public areas such as markets, hospitals, and parks. This includes around 20 hospitals in Ahmedabad, where paper bags are also available. The initiative has received positive feedback from the community, with many praising the easy access to reusable bags.

To monitor the distribution of bags, the authorities have developed a ‘Pratigya Live Dashboard’. This platform provides live updates on the availability of cloth bags across various ATMs. It reflects the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in its environmental efforts.

The government’s goal is to create a new era of environmental awareness in Gujarat. The campaign aims to educate citizens on the importance of reducing plastic usage and adopting sustainable practices in their daily lives. By promoting cloth bags, the initiative also empowers local artisans and supports the economy.

The response from the public has been overwhelming. Many people have expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting that it makes it easier to avoid plastic bags. The bag ATMs represent a simple yet effective solution to a pressing environmental issue, demonstrating how innovation can lead to positive change.

Overall, the introduction of bag ATMs in Ahmedabad is a commendable effort to foster a cleaner, greener environment. It highlights the city’s commitment to sustainability and serves as an example for other cities to follow. By encouraging the use of cloth bags, Ahmedabad is taking significant steps towards a plastic-free future.
