In a significant late-night operation, Ahmedabad City Police inspected 724 medical stores across the city. This surprise check took place on Tuesday and resulted in 160 cases being filed. Among these, one serious case involved the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police aimed to crack down on irregularities in the pharmaceutical retail sector. Teams from different police zones spread out across neighborhoods to target chemist shops. They focused on shops suspected of operating without proper licenses and those that dispense restricted medications without proper records. A senior police official stated that out of the 724 stores checked, 160 were found in violation of various regulations. One medical shop was discovered to possess restricted substances without proper documentation or prescription records, leading to the serious NDPS case. This operation comes amid rising concerns about the misuse of prescription drugs and the illegal sale of psychotropic substances in urban areas. The police confirmed that further investigations are ongoing and warned that these surprise checks would continue in the coming days. The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) has joined the operation. They will examine the seized stock and verify drug records. Authorities are expected to issue notices and begin license suspension proceedings against violators. This crackdown in Ahmedabad follows similar actions in other districts of Gujarat. It shows a coordinated effort at the state level to combat pharmaceutical malpractice. The city’s police and health authorities remain vigilant as they work to ensure public safety and compliance within the medical retail sector.
