Ahmedabad Pre-Monsoon Action Plan to Prevent Waterlogging

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has developed a Pre-Monsoon Action Plan to tackle the challenges posed by heavy rains during the monsoon season. The plan aims to manage rainwater, improve drainage, trim trees, control mosquitoes, and address several other issues. The focus is particularly on reducing the places where rainwater accumulates and ensuring quick drainage from affected areas.

In the past, Ahmedabad has faced significant waterlogging even with moderate rainfall. For instance, during the 2024 monsoon season, waterlogged conditions were reported in 147 locations, out of which 34 areas are targeted for improvement with a budget of ₹836 crores. The previous season in 2023 saw waterlogging in 130 locations. With the inclusion of new areas, the problem of waterlogging has increased.

The municipal corporation has made special arrangements to prevent water accumulation in underpasses. In the event of heavy rainfall, the automatic doors of these underpasses will close to prevent accidents. Additionally, contracts have been awarded for draining rainwater from 10 underpasses and 9 railway underpasses.

As in previous years, three rounds of cleaning for catch pits and machine holes will be conducted before the monsoon. This will help in faster drainage of rainwater. Unauthorized connections to stormwater lines will be removed urgently to improve the water-carrying capacity.

The Pre-Monsoon Action Plan meeting was chaired by Mayor Pratibha Ben Jain, attended by Deputy Mayor Jatin Patel, Standing Chairman Devang Dani, and other officials, including all Deputy Commissioners, engineering officers, and committee chairpersons. The collaboration aims to ensure a smoother experience for residents during the rainy season, making Ahmedabad a more resilient city in the face of heavy rains.
