In Ahmedabad, schools run by the Municipal Corporation are identified merely by numbers. They are called School 1, 2, 3, and so on. This is a matter of concern as most schools in the city do not have names that honour significant historical figures. Currently, only nine schools among the 450 managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) bear the names of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

This naming convention is not just an oversight. It reflects a wider issue about the recognition of those who have contributed to India’s history. Despite announcements and promises from the AMC to change this, the situation remains the same. The demand is clear: schools should not just be numbered but named after heroes, freedom fighters, renowned educators, Nobel laureates, and other influential figures.

The AMC has established approximately 450 primary schools that offer education in Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, and other regional languages. These schools aim to provide education to children from low and middle-income families in various areas of Ahmedabad. Unfortunately, without proper names, these schools are merely identified by numbers, which can lack a sense of identity and pride.

According to information obtained through an RTI application by activist Atik Saiyed, there was a decision to name schools after martyrs. However, only nine schools currently have the prefix ‘Veer Shaheed’ (Brave Martyr) in their names, while the remaining 441 schools continue to be identified by their numbers. This has raised questions about the commitment of the AMC to honour the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.

The request from the community is to revisit the AMC’s policy on school naming. It is urged that the names of prominent personalities who have made significant contributions to the nation be included. This could inspire students and give them a sense of belonging and pride in their educational institutions.

The lack of proper naming in schools is seen as a missed opportunity to instil values of heroism and patriotism among young minds. Naming schools after martyrs and notable figures could serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the country and encourage students to aspire to greatness.
