The Gujarat government has announced plans to divide the Ahmedabad City District Education Officer (DEO) office into two separate offices: Ahmedabad East and Ahmedabad West. This change aims to improve school administration and resolve long-standing jurisdictional issues. Currently, the Ahmedabad City DEO oversees more than 3,500 schools, including government, grant-in-aid, and private institutions across primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels. The Commissioner of Schools has requested detailed data on all schools managed by the Ahmedabad City DEO to facilitate this division.
To support this initiative, the state government has approved two new Class-1 DEO posts for the East and West offices, with financial backing in place. This restructuring is necessary because many schools in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits are currently managed by the Rural DEO, leading to confusion and delays in decision-making. For efficient governance, the following changes will be implemented: all rural schools will remain under the District Primary Education Officer (DPEO), while schools in East Ahmedabad will be managed by the new East DEO, and those in West Ahmedabad will be overseen by the West DEO.
The split aims to enhance administrative efficiency and eliminate overlapping jurisdictions. Many schools situated within AMC boundaries currently fall under the Rural DEO, causing complications for parents and school administrators alike. With the establishment of separate DEO offices, there will be focused attention on schools in both East and West Ahmedabad, ensuring timely resolutions of school-level issues.
The proposed changes will also help streamline the governance of schools in the region. The East DEO will manage schools up to the SP Ring Road, while the West DEO will oversee schools up to the 132-ft Ring Road. Areas beyond the 132-ft Ring Road, such as Ghatlodia, Vastrapur village, Jivraj Park, Thaltej, Sarkhej, Bopal, and Gota, will continue to fall under the Ahmedabad Rural DEO.
As data collection is underway, the government expects the establishment of these two offices to improve school management. This change is a welcome step for educators and parents who have faced challenges due to the existing structure. With new staff members, including Class-1 and Class-2 officers and clerks, the separate DEO offices are set to facilitate better governance and management of schools across the city. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the education system in Ahmedabad and ensuring that all students receive the attention and resources they need to thrive in their educational journeys.
The bifurcation of the DEO offices is a significant move towards addressing the increasing number of schools and the expanding jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
