Airtel Takes Action Against Online Fraud in Gujarat

Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom companies, has taken strong measures to combat online fraud in Gujarat. The company recently announced that it has successfully protected over 4.1 million users in the state within just 47 days. This achievement comes from the launch of an AI-based fraud detection system that automatically activates for all Airtel mobile and broadband customers.

The new security system scans and filters links sent through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, email, and other platforms. It uses real-time threat intelligence to analyze over 1 billion URLs daily. If a user attempts to access a suspicious site, the system blocks it in just 100 milliseconds. For instance, if a resident of Ahmedabad receives a message claiming, “Your parcel is delayed. Track it here: http://www.trackyourparcel.com,” and clicks the link without verification, Airtel’s AI system will immediately spring into action. It scans the link and, if found suspicious, blocks the site. The user is redirected to a warning page, stating, “Blocked! Airtel has deemed this site risky!” This entire process is completed in real-time, helping to prevent users from falling victim to online scams.

Adarsh Verma, CEO of Airtel Gujarat, expressed the company’s commitment to protecting customers from all forms of fraud. He stated, “At Airtel, we prioritise our customers’ safety from scams. The fraud detection solution we launched is designed to provide security across various platforms. Our goal is to enhance internet safety and protect against evolving cyber threats. We believe this solution will give Gujarat’s customers strong defence, allowing them to connect confidently in the digital world.”

Gujarat is one of the most digitally developed states in India, leading to a rise in online scams in both urban and rural areas. Attempts at fraud have increased through phishing links, fake delivery notifications, and false banking alerts. Cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Jamnagar, and Bhuj have seen a surge in such cases. Airtel’s solution acts as a digital shield for families, elderly people, homemakers, students, and first-time smartphone users.

The AI-powered platform provides fraud alerts in the user’s preferred language, including Gujarati, making it more effective for people across the state. This is particularly useful in areas where digital literacy is low, or English is less commonly used. The solution works quietly in the background, requiring no installation and is completely free of charge.
