In Gujarat, serious allegations have emerged regarding irregularities in the Homeguard officer examination. This examination took place at the Sundhiya Training Centre in Mehsana over the last six days, culminating on Wednesday. Reports suggest that the exam was not conducted fairly. There was no official notice or public announcement about the exam process. Opposition party Congress has raised concerns that only BJP workers or individuals linked to the RSS were allowed to take part in the exam.
Two months ago, some officers who passed the platoon commander exam, despite not meeting the required criteria, were allowed to sit for this exam. This has raised questions about the integrity of the selection process, especially since strict rules apply to Homeguard members but seem to be overlooked for officials. According to the regulations, there should be a gap of one year between any two exams. However, some officers who have not been active for years, living over 200 km away from their units, were still permitted to take the exam. This situation has unfolded under the supervision of Commandant General Manoj Agrawal.
Homeguards serve as honorary members and cannot be compelled to perform daily duties. However, they are required to attend parades and emergency duties. With important board exams approaching, a significant number of Homeguards will need to fulfill their essential roles. Additionally, there have been cuts from the Homeguard Welfare Fund, which is vital for the families of all Homeguard members. Hence, all members must complete their necessary duties. Those who fail to attend their duties risk being dismissed from the force, as stated in a notice from the district Homeguard Commandant.
In Bhuj, Kutch district, the recruitment process for Homeguards has begun today at the police headquarters. Candidates are undergoing physical tests in the presence of state-level officers from the police and Homeguard units. From 280 available positions, around 230 local youths have shown interest in joining as Homeguards. Bhuj Police Headquarters DYSP B.M. Desai reported that the physical test started at 6:30 AM today. Candidates’ heights and weights were measured, followed by a 1600-meter run. Each candidate must complete this run within 9 minutes. The entire process is being recorded on video. The recruitment drive is expected to continue for another three to four days, with planning managed by district Homeguard officials and staff alongside the police.
