At the Government Vinayan College in Amirgarh, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit organised a tree plantation event themed ‘One Tree for One Name’. This initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage students to participate in preserving nature.
The saplings used for the plantation were sourced from the Central Nursery located in Rajpuriya, within the Amirgarh taluka. The NSS volunteers, alongside college students, participated in this programme with the support and guidance of their teachers. Together, they planted various trees in the college campus, with cooperation from local villagers.
The event featured a diverse range of saplings, including fruit-bearing trees like jamun, mango, lemon, and pomegranate. Additionally, medicinal plants such as amla, haritaki, basil, and other herbs were also planted. Flowering plants like champa, jassud, and karira were included in the plantation as well. After planting, the students made sure to provide fertilizers and water to the newly planted trees.
During the event, students and volunteers were educated about the harmful effects of single-use plastic and pollution. They learned about the importance of controlling pollution and the need for environmental conservation. The NSS unit provided useful information and guidance on how to maintain a healthy environment.
The entire programme witnessed active participation from students, NSS volunteers, and both teaching and non-teaching staff. They all committed to nurturing and protecting the trees planted during the event. This initiative not only aimed at beautifying the campus but also at instilling a sense of responsibility among students towards the environment.
Tree plantation drives like this are crucial as they not only help in combating climate change but also improve the overall health of the community by enhancing air quality and providing shade. The enthusiasm shown by the college community reflects the growing awareness about environmental issues and the need for collective action.
By participating in such initiatives, students can play a significant role in promoting sustainability and making a positive impact on their surroundings. The NSS unit at Amirgarh College has set a commendable example for other institutions to follow, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship in education.
