In Ahmedabad, the Indian Seva Samaj Ashram has lost its land after a court ruling. The Sabarmati Mamlatdar’s office has taken control of the ashram’s land, which spans 80,940 square meters. This decision follows the High Court’s dismissal of all objections from the ashram and its affiliates, including the Sadashiv Ashram. Asaram Ashram is now next in line for land seizure. The government has decided to reclaim this land to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games in 2036.
The ashram’s land was originally given to the Indian Seva Samaj by the Ahmedabad Collector in 1964. However, the ashram has reportedly violated government conditions regarding land use. Notices were issued to vacate the land after it was found to be unused for many years. The Mamlatdar, Nilesh Rabari, confirmed that all evidence against the ashram was submitted to the court, which upheld the actions taken by the Mamlatdar’s office.
Asaram, also known as Asumal, is a controversial spiritual leader currently serving a life sentence for rape. His ashram in Motera is still active and attracts many followers. With plans for the Olympics, the government aims to develop the area around the ashram into a sports enclave, including an Olympic Village and other facilities. This project will require the removal of several ashrams, including Asaram’s.
The land seizure process is already underway, with a committee led by the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner working on the master plan. It is reported that the land will be cleared for new sports infrastructure. This includes other ashrams like the Sadashiv Pragna Mandal, which may also be relocated. Asaram’s followers have expressed anger at this decision, but others support it, stating that the land should be used for a greater purpose like the Olympic Games.
The government hopes to transform the Motera area into a major sports hub, which will include the construction of new stadiums and facilities for athletes from around the world. The plan aligns with the city’s aspirations to host the Olympic Games, which would significantly boost Ahmedabad’s international profile.
Asaram’s case highlights the intersection of spirituality, law, and government policy in India. The ashram’s controversial history and the ongoing legal battles make it a focal point of public interest. While some view the impending land seizure as a necessary step for development, others see it as an attack on religious institutions.
