Banej Village Becomes First in District to Install Water Meters

In a significant development, Banej village in the Dabhoi taluka has become the first village in the district to install water meters for households. This initiative is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing continuous water supply to residents. Previously, the village faced challenges in water distribution and usage. Now, villagers have access to water 24 hours a day, thanks to the new metering system that encourages responsible water use.

Before the installation of meters, water was supplied for 18 hours a day, with a motor running to fill a large overhead tank. This system required the motor to operate for long hours, often leading to inefficiencies and water wastage. The new system has reduced motor operation to just 6 hours a day, demonstrating a significant improvement in water management.

The village’s water supply system had been problematic, especially during the dry season when water pressure was low in elevated areas. Villagers often had to install their own motors to draw water from the supply. The local government struggled to meet the demands of the community, sometimes resulting in water supply disruptions due to motor failures or pipeline issues.

In 2017, the village council decided to revamp the water distribution system. The District Water and Sanitation Committee approved a project worth ₹11.21 lakh, with 90% funding from the government and the remaining amount raised by villagers. This collective effort led to the installation of pipelines, repair of storage tanks, and the establishment of pumping stations. Each household was provided with a direct water connection to ensure consistent and equal distribution.

Additionally, an automatic system was implemented in the village’s water tank. When the tank runs low, the motor automatically activates to refill it. This has further reduced the motor operation time and improved water availability to all households, ensuring that even upper floors receive adequate water pressure.

The introduction of water meters has brought a positive change in the villagers’ attitudes towards water usage. Residents are now more conscious of their consumption and tend to lock taps when leaving their homes. The meters help them track their usage, promoting a culture of water conservation in the village.

Banej Village has set an example for others in the district to follow. With its successful implementation of the water meter system, it demonstrates how technology and community efforts can lead to sustainable water management. This initiative not only addresses current water supply issues but also fosters a sense of responsibility among residents towards preserving this precious resource.

As the village continues to benefit from these advancements, it is hoped that more villages in the region will adopt similar practices to ensure effective water management and sustainability in the future.
