The health and well-being of adolescents is of utmost importance. In India, around 20% of the population is aged between 10 and 19. To support the holistic development of these young people, health education is crucial. This is especially true for girls, who need awareness about menstrual hygiene, management, and related health issues. With this goal in mind, the Sabarkantha District Panchayat is celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28. This event is part of the Ritukal Sanskar Mahotsav, aimed at promoting menstrual health and hygiene.
The celebrations include various educational activities at the district’s nursing college, ITI, and government offices. These activities involve health ambassadors, peer educators, and focus groups. They will conduct online quizzes, rangoli, art competitions, public speaking contests, role plays, and the Red Dot Challenge. There will also be an exhibition of menstrual products like pads, tampons, and menstrual cups, along with health education regarding menstrual care.
The Ritukal Sanskar Mahotsav will take place at the Ayushman Health Mandir – Sub Centre, and will be celebrated on designated days at the taluka level. On May 28, World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the district-level celebration will occur. Peer educators and counsellors will perform dramas, and winners of the online quizzes held in various government offices will be awarded. The best performers throughout the month will also be recognised and rewarded.
The Sabarkantha district was created on May 1, 1960, during the formation of the state of Gujarat. It is located in the northeastern part of Gujarat, bordered by Rajasthan to the north and Banaskantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, and Aravalli districts. The main town is Himatnagar, situated about 60 km from the state capital and 78 km from Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat. Sabarkantha has a rich history and cultural heritage that includes rivers, lakes, palaces, and forts.
The district has a population of approximately 1.47 million, with a significant portion belonging to the tribal community and socially disadvantaged groups. The district consists of eight talukas: Himatnagar, Prantij, Talod, Idar, Vadali, Khedbrahma, Vijaynagar, and Poshina. Since its establishment, the district has been working towards improving the health and education of its residents.
The celebration of menstrual hygiene awareness is an important step towards empowering young girls and ensuring their health. By providing education on menstrual health, the Sabarkantha District Panchayat aims to create a supportive environment for adolescents. This initiative not only addresses health issues but also encourages open discussions about menstruation, breaking the stigma surrounding it.
