Chandola Lake Development Work Begins in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad has begun an important project to clean and deepen Chandola Lake. This comes after the demolition of over 12,000 illegal structures around the lake. These buildings were removed to restore the area and improve the environment. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is leading this effort. They are using JCB machines and about 100 trucks to remove debris. Each day, over 2,000 tons of waste is being cleared from the site.

The first phase of the demolition saw around 4,000 structures taken down. In the second phase, an additional 8,500 structures were removed, freeing up space around the lake. The removal of these buildings started immediately after the demolition was completed.

The lake is now being deepened, which is a part of the development plan by the AMC. They aim to improve water storage in the city. Currently, 100 trucks are working daily to remove debris and soil from the lake. The soil that is being extracted will be used in a reforestation project in Gyaspur. This plan is intended to help in environmental conservation and improve the overall cleanliness of the city.

To deepen the lake, the AMC has deployed 4 JCB machines, 27 excavators, and 90 trucks. They have already excavated around 918 cubic meters of soil from a section of the lake, which is about 1531 square meters deep. This work is crucial for enhancing water storage in the region, which covers approximately 11 lakh square meters. By doing this, the groundwater level in the surrounding areas is expected to rise.

The AMC is also focused on processing construction and demolition waste. The waste collected will be used to create useful products at their processing plant. This is part of a larger effort to manage waste efficiently and promote recycling.

Chandola Lake is an important ecological area in Ahmedabad. It is home to various bird species and is a popular spot for local visitors. The lake was originally constructed during the Mughal era, and it has historical significance. This development project aims not only to clean the lake but also to enhance its aesthetic appeal and ecological balance.

The demolition and development efforts have not been without controversy. Some local leaders have raised concerns about the impact on residents who have lived in the area for years. They have requested that the authorities consider the needs of these residents during the cleanup process.

Despite these issues, the AMC remains committed to the project. They believe that the long-term benefits of a cleaner and deeper lake will outweigh the short-term challenges. The project is expected to transform Chandola Lake into a more beautiful and environmentally friendly space for the community.

In conclusion, the work at Chandola Lake marks a significant step towards improving urban infrastructure in Ahmedabad. It reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation. As the project progresses, residents hope to see a positive change in their surroundings and an improvement in their quality of life.
