Ahmedabad is home to the largest lake in the city, known as Chandola Lake. Spanning 11 lakh square meters, it has faced significant illegal encroachments. A report stated that over 12,000 structures existed around the lake, including around 700 commercial buildings. Many of these were built by illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
To address this issue, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), with support from the state government, initiated a major demolition campaign. The aim is to develop Chandola Lake and reclaim the area for environmental and community benefits. The operation took place in two phases. The first phase occurred between April 29 and May 1, 2025, during which about 4,000 illegal structures were removed. This cleared approximately 1.5 lakh square meters of space around the lake.
In the second phase, which began later, about 8,500 structures were targeted, including 650 commercial establishments. The demolition also included various religious structures that locals had built. This operation was critical to ensure the lake’s development and restore its natural environment.
Riddhesh Rawal, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Estate Department, confirmed that the AMC and police worked closely to ensure the operation was smooth and safe. They aimed to prevent any disturbances that might arise from the local community. The goal is to make the lake area cleaner, healthier, and more attractive for residents and visitors.
The AMC has proposed fully developing the lake and has plans to resettle local families who lived there before December 1, 2010. The standing committee of the AMC has decided to send a proposal to the government for this resettlement plan. The committee allocated a budget of ₹3.30 lakh to provide housing for these families.
After implementing the resettlement scheme, the demolition operation will continue until all illegal structures are removed. The AMC’s southern zone has been assigned this task, and the operation is expected to be completed by May 20, 2025.
The AMC believes that properly managing Chandola Lake will ultimately enhance the groundwater levels in the surrounding area. This development is essential not only for the environment but also for the community’s safety and well-being.
Chandola Lake is a historical site, constructed by the wife of a Mughal Sultan, it has historically served as a habitat for various bird species. In recent years, however, illegal encroachments have hampered its natural beauty and ecological importance. The lake is also known for its recreational potential, drawing visitors for its scenic views.
The AMC’s efforts are expected to restore the lake’s capacity to hold water, which has been reduced over the years due to illegal constructions. The authorities hope that these improvements will lead to a cleaner and greener Ahmedabad, transforming Chandola Lake into a more vibrant part of the city.
