Nadiad, a city in Gujarat, has faced ongoing issues even after becoming a corporation six months ago. Citizens are frustrated with the poor sanitation and infrastructure in the area. Many streets are filled with garbage and stagnant water due to inadequate cleaning. Potholes and broken streetlights have also created safety concerns for residents.
Today, the Congress party in Nadiad protested against the local government, chanting slogans like “No facilities, no tax!” They submitted a petition to the municipal commissioner, highlighting the problems faced by the citizens. The Congress president in the city, Hardik Bhatt, expressed concern over the misuse of funds allocated under the Swachh Bharat Mission. He stated that the funds seem to exist only on paper, with the reality showing piles of waste and poorly maintained roads.
Many roads in the city are of low quality and quickly fall into disrepair. Citizens feel their money is wasted, as potholes appear within months of repairs. Despite the guarantee period for road maintenance, contractors are not held accountable for their work. Additionally, many streetlights are either broken or turned off, posing risks for women, senior citizens, and students after dark.
The petition also mentioned that pre-monsoon preparations were not completed on time, despite warnings of heavy rainfall. The work that was supposed to be done appears to exist only in reports. This has led to the recurring issue of flooding during the rainy season, worsening the state of roads.
Furthermore, citizens are questioning why agencies involved in corruption cases continue to receive contracts instead of being blacklisted. The lack of accountability and transparency has led to growing discontent among Nadiad residents.
The Congress party’s protest reflects the wider frustrations of many citizens who feel neglected by their local government. They demand better services and accountability, urging the municipal authorities to take immediate action to resolve these long-standing issues. The protest served as a reminder that local governance should prioritise the needs of its residents, ensuring that funds are used effectively to improve their living conditions.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these concerns and whether changes will be made to address the issues raised by the citizens of Nadiad.
