Controversy Erupts Over Demolition in Halol Amid Grant for Lake Beautification

Halol, a town in Gujarat, is witnessing a storm of controversy over recent demolition activities linked to a beautification project for a local lake. Former Congress MLA and minister Udesinh Bariya has raised serious allegations against the local municipality, claiming that the demolitions are a cover for corruption.

According to Bariya, the demolition of shops built over 30 years ago is a tragic event. He argues that the Halol Municipality has acted against the principles of natural justice. Shopkeepers had previously deposited substantial amounts, around ₹80,000, during the auction of these shops and have been paying rent since then.

The municipality claims that the shops were in a dilapidated state and posed safety risks. However, Bariya questions this reasoning, pointing out that many buildings in Halol are over 35 years old. He wonders why the officials are not concerned about other old buildings if safety is the real issue.

The demolition coincides with a recent grant of crores of rupees for the beautification of the lake, leading Bariya to suggest that the demolitions may be a way for officials to benefit financially from the project. He accuses the Chief Officer of the municipality and elected representatives of severe corruption.

Bariya stated that the municipality’s activities are well-known for being corrupt. He pointed to a past incident where a former president was ordered to return crores of rupees, which he believes is evidence of ongoing malpractices.

Further allegations include that the Chief Officer has been involved in the illegal disposal of seized banned plastic materials, selling them without following proper regulations. This, Bariya claims, has led to a loss of jobs for approximately 5,000 families in the area, as local plastic industries are now struggling due to these actions.

The situation has sparked protests from local shopkeepers and residents, who argue that the demolitions are unjustified. They are demanding accountability from the municipality and a halt to the demolitions.

As the beautification project progresses, the local community remains on edge, watching closely how the government handles these allegations and whether any investigations will take place. The outcome of this situation could have significant implications not only for Halol but also for the residents who depend on these small businesses for their livelihoods.

With the opposition party calling for a thorough investigation, the issue is expected to gain more attention in the coming days. Many are hoping for a fair resolution that respects the rights of the shopkeepers while addressing any genuine safety concerns.

As the story unfolds, the Halol Municipality faces mounting pressure to clarify its actions and restore trust within the community. The residents are keen on seeing changes that will ensure transparency and accountability in local governance.
