The admission process for undergraduate courses in Gujarat has faced criticism due to irregularities in the merit list. Many students who scored lower marks were admitted, while those with higher scores were left without a seat. This issue has raised concerns among students and their families, prompting action from student organisations. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has taken the lead in addressing these problems.
On Monday, representatives from NSUI met with the Vice-Chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University in Patan. They presented a letter detailing the flaws in the GCAS (Gujarat Common Admission Service) portal’s admission process. The student leaders expressed their disappointment with the system, which they believed was meant to be transparent and fair.
According to NSUI, many students applied through the GCAS portal for admission to various colleges affiliated with the university. However, the merit list showed significant discrepancies. Students with lower marks received admission offers, while those with higher marks were denied entry into their chosen courses. This situation has caused confusion and frustration among students.
Prem Patel, a representative of NSUI, stated that the irregularities in the merit list have left students in a difficult position. They expected a fair evaluation based on their academic performance. Instead, the process seemed to favour those with lower marks. NSUI’s letter urged the university to quickly resolve these issues.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.C. Poria, acknowledged the concerns raised by the student organisation. He assured them that the university would take necessary steps to address the situation and ensure that the interests of students are protected. The response from the university has provided some hope for the affected students, but many are still waiting for a clear resolution.
The GCAS portal was launched to streamline the admission process for undergraduate courses in the state. It aimed to provide an efficient and transparent method for students to secure their places in colleges. However, the current controversy has raised questions about its effectiveness.
As of mid-May, over 208,000 students had registered on the GCAS portal, with approximately 122,619 selecting their preferred college programmes. However, many students are expressing dissatisfaction with the outcomes of the admission process.
The university has announced that it will extend the online application process until May 21, allowing students to take advantage of the opportunity to secure admissions. With the publication of the standard 12 results set for May 19, students without their original mark sheets faced difficulties in verification, leading to the extension.
As the situation develops, the university is expected to take further action to improve the admission process. This includes plans to open the portal for new registrations and modifications for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in early July. Students who were unable to secure admission are encouraged to register again during this period.
