In Nadiad, Gujarat, two individuals have been arrested for conducting cyber attacks during the recent tensions between India and Pakistan. The arrests were made by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on May 20. The suspects are Jasim Shahnawaz Ansari, 18, and a minor, who allegedly attempted to take down various government websites using Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
According to reports, these cyber attackers created a Telegram group named Anonsec, where they shared screenshots of their actions along with anti-India messages. The police seized their mobile phones for further investigation. The ATS tracked the suspects after receiving detailed information about their activities.
The investigation revealed that between April and May, the duo targeted over 50 government websites. They used DDoS attacks to disrupt services and posted provocative content on their Telegram channel. The ATS has registered cases against them under the Information Technology Act, 2000, citing violations of sections 43 and 66(F).
DDoS attacks involve overwhelming a target server or network with traffic from multiple sources, rendering it unavailable to legitimate users. These attacks can disrupt online services, cause financial losses, and damage the reputation of the affected organizations.
In a recent operation on May 7, the Indian government launched a counter-terrorism initiative called Operation Sindhur in response to previous terrorist attacks. Following this, the suspects intensified their cyber assaults, targeting significant sectors like defense, finance, and urban development. They aimed to undermine India’s national security and economy through their actions.
The Nadiad court has granted a five-day remand for Jasim Ansari, allowing the ATS to investigate further. They are looking into whether the suspects have connections with other individuals involved in similar activities.
The swift action by the ATS highlights the increasing concern over cyber terrorism in India. As technology evolves, so does the threat posed by cybercriminals. The authorities are determined to crack down on these activities to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
