The Sabarmati Riverfront project in Ahmedabad is set to expand with the launch of Phase-3. This new phase will be developed by a Dubai-based company, Sobha Realty, at a cost of ₹1,000 crore. The project aims to enhance the riverfront along both sides from Indira Bridge to the Narmada Canal.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the state government, has previously developed Phase-1, which covers an 11 km stretch. Currently, work on Phase-2 is ongoing, with significant progress made from Dufnala to Indira Bridge. With the completion of this work, Phase-3 is now on the horizon.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Municipal Corporation and Sobha Realty was signed on September 30, 2023. The agreement outlines that the Dubai company will handle various construction tasks, including building diaphragm walls, anchor slabs, and retaining walls, among others.
The total length of the riverfront in Phase-3 will be around 5 km, stretching from Indira Bridge to the Narmada Canal. The Gujarat government has designated the project as a priority by reappointing a nodal agency on July 25, 2024.
This phase will feature ten viewpoint plazas based on different themes, along with a promenade for public use. A significant aspect of this development is the planned tree plantation area, which will span approximately 1.5 lakh square meters. Recreational activities will also be integrated into the design.
Once completed, this riverfront will enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. It will also benefit people traveling to northern Gujarat.
The Sabarmati Riverfront project is not just about beautification; it aims to improve urban infrastructure, reduce pollution, and promote tourism. The river has been a vital part of Ahmedabad’s identity and history, and this development will help rejuvenate the area.
The Sabarmati River is one of the major rivers in western India, originating from the Aravalli Range in Rajasthan and flowing through Gujarat before meeting the Arabian Sea. The river is significant for both its cultural and ecological value.
Historically, the river has faced pollution challenges. Efforts to clean the river have seen mixed results, but projects like the riverfront development aim to restore its health. The government is committed to making the Sabarmati a cleaner and more enjoyable space for residents and visitors alike.
In summary, the Sabarmati Riverfront Phase-3 is a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable Ahmedabad. The collaboration with international firms like Sobha Realty brings in expertise and investment that can transform the riverfront into a major urban attraction and a source of pride for the city.
