Disappointing Year for Gir Mango Season in Gujarat

The mango season in the Gir region of Gujarat has officially ended on June 8, 2025. This year, the season was marked by disappointing results for local farmers and traders. The Talala marketing yard, the only auction centre for Gir mangoes, reported the lowest revenue in 23 years. The first auction started on April 26, 2025, and lasted for 44 days. During this period, only 449,450 boxes of mangoes were auctioned. This figure is the lowest since the 2001-2002 season, when 431,430 boxes were sold. Despite an average price of ₹560 per 10 kg this year, the total revenue fell significantly. The main reason for this decline is attributed to adverse weather conditions and unseasonal rains that have severely affected the mango crop. The chairman of the Talala marketing yard stated that the estimated sales this year amounted to ₹24 to ₹26 crore. However, both farmers and traders are calling this year ‘extremely weak.’ The Gir mango, known for its sweet taste and bright orange colour, is grown mainly in the Junagadh and Amreli districts of Gujarat. It is considered one of the most expensive mango varieties in India. The crop usually starts coming in April, but this year’s difficult weather has led to a significant drop in production. The Gir mango has received geographical indication status, which helps protect its unique identity. The impact of this year’s poor mango season will likely be felt in the local economy, as many families rely on the harvest for their livelihoods. The 2025 season has been a tough reminder of how vulnerable agriculture can be to climate change and unpredictable weather patterns. Farmers are now hoping for better conditions in the coming years, as they strive to improve their harvest and regain market confidence.
