In Mehsana district, a recent police operation has led to the arrest of a man with 17 kg of ganja. This operation was conducted by the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) as part of their efforts to combat drug-related activities in the area. The suspect, identified as Babusha Husensha Fakir, 61, was caught transporting the drugs in an auto-rickshaw. The incident took place on a road leading from Sipor village to Vadnagar, near the Metro Supermarket. Alongside the ganja, the police also seized a mobile phone worth ₹500 and the auto-rickshaw valued at ₹50,000, bringing the total value of the seized items to ₹2,24,330.
The operation took place on May 16 and 17, and it highlights the increasing drug issues in Gujarat. Residents of Vadnagar have expressed concerns about rising crime rates and have called for the transfer of local police officers, citing their lack of effective action against illegal activities. Locals feel that the area is becoming a hub for drug trafficking and criminal behaviour.
The SMC has been proactive in their efforts, conducting raids across various cities and villages in Mehsana. During the recent raids, they not only apprehended Babusha but also identified three other individuals involved in the drug trade. These individuals are wanted for sending and receiving shipments of ganja. One of them, Said Mohammad Rafik Mohammad Sheikh, is from Udaipur, Rajasthan, and has a criminal record related to drug offenses. The police have noted that this ongoing drug problem is compounded by the apparent inaction of the local police, who seem to be unaware of the criminal activities happening right under their noses.
The situation has prompted Vadnagar residents to voice their concerns more loudly, demanding changes in the local police force. They argue that if the State Monitoring Cell can carry out successful operations, then the local police should be doing more to ensure community safety. Many believe that the rise in crime in Vadnagar is directly linked to the inefficiency of local law enforcement.
In addition to drug-related arrests, the SMC also raided illegal gambling activities in the district. They apprehended 19 individuals engaged in gambling, seizing ₹2.46 lakh in cash, 22 mobile phones, and 10 vehicles, with a total estimated value of ₹35.97 lakh. This indicates a broader issue of illegal activities flourishing in the region, often with the alleged support or negligence of local police.
The community’s frustration is mounting as they seek better protection from crime. They feel abandoned by a police force that should be safeguarding them, especially in a historical town like Vadnagar. The demand for police reform and accountability is growing, as citizens want to see effective measures taken to combat both drug trafficking and gambling.
As the SMC continues its operations, the hope is that these actions will lead to a more significant crackdown on illegal activities in Mehsana district. The residents are urging local authorities to take their concerns seriously and work towards restoring safety and peace in their community. Only time will tell if these demands will lead to the necessary changes in policing strategies in Vadnagar and beyond.
