This morning, Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel officially began the 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad. Shortly after the procession started, a chaotic incident occurred when one elephant got out of control. During this grand event, thousands of devotees were present in the Khadia area when three elephants suddenly broke free, causing panic among the crowd.
Witnesses reported that in one moment, the atmosphere was filled with joyous chants, and in the next, there were elephants running through the streets. Devotees began to flee in search of safety. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Eyewitnesses described the scene as frightening but also miraculous, as the elephants were quickly brought under control.
The police and volunteers acted swiftly to manage the situation. They stopped the sound of whistles immediately to prevent further agitation among the animals. Prior to this, the Chief Minister performed a sacred ritual, waving a green flag to signal the start of the yatra. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also participated in the morning prayers.
This year, the yatra featured 18 elephants, 101 cultural trucks, 30 akhadas (spiritual groups), 18 bhajan mandalis (devotional singing groups), and three band parties. Saints from various parts of India, including Haridwar, Ayodhya, and Nashik, joined the celebration.
As news of the incident spread, police, fire brigade, and medical staff rushed to the site. Local residents expressed their relief, saying, “It was terrifying, but today was a miraculous day. The elephants were controlled without anyone getting hurt.”
Thanks to the vigilance of authorities and staff, a major disaster was averted, and the yatra resumed peacefully.
