On June 12, 2025, a tragic plane crash occurred in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, causing shock and sorrow across the country. The crash involved an Air India flight with 242 people on board. This incident tested the response capabilities of various emergency services in the region. Fortunately, quick action by fire and rescue teams helped save many lives.
According to Chief Fire Officer A.A. Dongre, the first call about the plane crash came in just before 1:40 PM. The nearest fire station in Naroda received the call and dispatched a team that arrived at the crash site within three minutes. Their rapid response was crucial. The fire team immediately began rescue operations, successfully saving the lives of over 30 individuals trapped in the wreckage.
Dongre praised the efforts of the fire fighters who were the first to assess the situation on the ground. They quickly realised the severity of the incident and called for additional support from nearby cities, including Gandhinagar, Kheda, Anand, Vadodara, and even military fire teams. Within a short time, more than 100 fire fighters were working at the crash site, which allowed the rescue operation to be completed in just four hours.
To control the fire and cool down the wreckage, the teams used approximately 750,000 litres of water. They were equipped with modern firefighting resources, making the operation more effective. Dongre noted that over 650 trained firefighters, along with more than 100 firefighting vehicles, participated in the operation. Remarkably, no firefighter was injured during the rescue efforts.
In addition to the firefighting teams, over 98 ambulances were deployed to transport the injured to hospitals. A green corridor was established to ensure quick access to medical facilities. Dongre highlighted that the coordination among various agencies, including police, ambulance services, NDRF, SDRF, CISF, the army, and local administration, contributed to the success of the operation. This teamwork allowed for the efficient and swift rescue of many lives.
The aftermath of the crash has left families devastated. While 241 people were confirmed dead, efforts were ongoing to identify victims and assist their families. DNA tests were being conducted to ensure that the bodies could be returned to their loved ones. One family, however, is still searching for their missing relative, Mahesh Kalawadia, who was last seen near the crash site.
Mahesh’s family has been anxiously waiting for news since the crash. His brother Kartik shared that Mahesh was last in contact with his wife shortly before the incident. They had been searching hospitals and police stations for information, but so far, there has been no sign of him.
As the investigation continues, the community is rallying together to support the victims’ families. Many are expressing their condolences and offering help during this difficult time. The Ahmedabad plane crash serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and the dedication of first responders in saving lives during crises.
