On June 2, 2025, a man was arrested for impersonating a ticket collector at Ahmedabad Railway Station. The incident occurred around 10 PM near the Sabarmati side foot overbridge. Railway Security Force (RPF) officer Piyush Chaudhary noticed a suspicious individual dressed in a ticket collector’s uniform. When questioned, the man could not provide satisfactory answers about his identity.
The suspect was taken to the post for further questioning. He identified himself as Shiv Shankar Jaiswal, a 45-year-old resident of Sundarpur, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. During the inquiry, he admitted to wearing a fake uniform and checking passengers’ tickets. He used QR codes to collect money from unsuspecting travelers.
This was not the first time he had been caught. He had previously been seen engaging in similar activities on May 30, 2025, at the same station. The man had no valid railway identification or documents, only an ATM card and an Aadhaar card.
Investigators discovered that he targeted uneducated workers and less-informed passengers. He tricked them by claiming there were issues with their tickets or by offering berth allocations to waiting list passengers through QR code scans. To hide his identity, he wore a mask.
The Railway Administration has urged passengers to show their tickets only to authorized ticket inspectors. They advised anyone witnessing suspicious activities to report them immediately to railway police or relevant authorities.
This incident highlights the ongoing problem of ticket fraud in Indian railways. The authorities have warned passengers to be cautious when booking tickets. In recent years, many travelers have lost money and tickets due to scams involving fake agents. In 2021 alone, over 15,000 long-distance passengers fell victim to similar frauds.
Railway officials have seized thousands of fake tickets and have taken strict measures against unauthorized ticket sales. They keep track of known offenders and have formed special teams to monitor ticket sales and protect passengers. If a passenger unknowingly boards with a fake ticket, they could face fines and possibly be asked to leave the train.
Passengers are advised to book tickets only through official channels and to verify their ticket details before travel. By remaining vigilant, travelers can help prevent these scams and ensure a smoother journey.
