Farewell to Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Following Tragic Plane Crash

Rajkot is mourning the loss of its former Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani. He tragically lost his life in a plane crash on June 12, 2025. The crash occurred while he was on a flight from Ahmedabad to London, aiming to meet his daughter on Father’s Day. Sadly, he was one of the passengers who did not survive, with only one other person surviving the incident.

After the DNA matching process confirmed his identity, his mortal remains were handed over to his family by hospital authorities. Early in the morning, his body was flown back to Rajkot, where local residents gathered to pay their respects. The atmosphere was heavy with grief as people wept openly, showing their love and admiration for the former leader.

From 4 to 5 PM, Vijay Rupani’s body will be on display at his residence for the public to pay their last respects. The final journey will start at 5 PM, with the procession moving from his home to the Ramnath Yash crematorium. The ceremony will be conducted with full political honours, acknowledging his contributions to Gujarat.

Key political figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have confirmed their attendance at the funeral. Many BJP leaders, local representatives, and citizens will join the procession to pay tribute to Rupani, who was known for his dedication to the people of Gujarat.

During the procession, crowds are expected to chant slogans in memory of Rupani, celebrating his legacy as a development-oriented leader who played a significant role in Rajkot’s growth. His passing has left a void in the community, with many expressing their sorrow through tears and tributes.

Vijay Rupani was a prominent figure in Indian politics, serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 7, 2016, until he resigned on September 11, 2021. Born on August 2, 1956, in Rangoon, Burma, Rupani became actively involved in politics during his college years. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and served in various capacities throughout his career, including as the party’s state president before becoming Chief Minister.

His career was marked by commitment to public service and a passion for development, leading numerous initiatives in Gujarat. His dedication earned him respect and admiration from citizens across the state.

In light of his passing, the Gujarat government has declared a day of mourning on June 16, with national flags flown at half-mast. The loss of Vijay Rupani is felt deeply, not only in Rajkot but throughout Gujarat, where he is remembered as a leader who was always ready to help others.

The funeral arrangements have been made with great care, ensuring that he receives a dignified farewell. From 2 PM to 2:30 PM, his body will be transported from Rajkot Airport to Greenland Chowk, and from there, it will go to his residence.

The procession route will take him through significant landmarks in Rajkot, highlighting his connection to the community he served. The funeral will conclude with his body being cremated at the Ramnath Para crematorium, where he will be laid to rest among the elements, as per Hindu traditions.

As the city prepares to say goodbye to a beloved leader, many are reflecting on his contributions and the impact he had on their lives. Vijay Rupani’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he served, and his story will continue to inspire future generations.
