A fire broke out at a new synthetic organic chemicals plant in Dahej before it was officially operational. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening while the plant was conducting trial runs. Two workers were injured and are receiving treatment. The fire department received a major call about the incident and rushed to the scene. The blaze quickly spread throughout the building, causing panic among employees. Firefighters from the Dahej fire department and nearby companies arrived to control the fire. The flames were so intense that they could be seen from a distance. Local residents expressed concern due to the presence of chemical companies nearby.
The Dahej police, along with the Industrial Safety and Health Department, and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) team, arrived at the site to investigate. Their aim was to understand how the fire started and to provide guidance on controlling it. Eight to ten fire tenders worked for hours to bring the fire under control.
Two workers, Chirag Nizama and Savan Devchand, suffered burns and were taken to the hospital. One employee climbed onto the roof of the plant to escape the flames and was rescued by firefighters using a crane.
Jagruti Chauhan, an official from the Industrial Safety and Health Department, stated that the fire occurred at the Shvetayan Chem Tech Company, located next to the Indian Chemical Company and Indoor Raising Company. Three workers were injured in total and received medical care.
The company had obtained a license for 20 workers in September 2024, but the plant had not yet begun operations. The fire broke out during trial production runs. Further information is being sought from Prabhulal Sanghani, who received the license for the plant.
Meena Bene, the local district officer, confirmed via telephone that the fire is now under control and further actions are being taken. Kishorsinh Vadhamsi, the regional officer from Yzhrm, mentioned that their team inspected the site following the fire. They confirmed that the company had received environmental approval to set up the plant on June 2, 2021. The authorities will also investigate whether the company had adequate fire safety measures in place.
This incident raises concerns about safety in industrial areas, especially those dealing with hazardous materials. The local community is worried about the potential risks associated with chemical plants operating in close proximity to residential areas. The authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take necessary actions to prevent future occurrences.
