In Patan, a city known for its religious significance, a unique event took place. For the first time ever, devotees made an offering of 21 kilograms of dry fruits at the Shri Jagannath Bhagwan Temple. This event coincides with the upcoming Rath Yatra, scheduled for June 27, which is the 143rd procession of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, Bhai Balabhadra and Sister Subhadra. The Rath Yatra is a significant event in Patan, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with devotion among the locals.
This year, the temple trust and Rath Yatra committee planned several religious celebrations leading up to the Rath Yatra. On Monday, in honour of the Ashadhi Bij, the offering of dry fruits was a special event. The dry fruits included cashews, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, figs, and others, which were used to decorate the deity’s altar.
Devotees expressed their joy and gratitude after witnessing the beautiful decoration of dry fruits. Many participated in this sacred ritual, feeling blessed by Lord Jagannath. The temple trust members and priests joined the devotees in this unique offering, making it a memorable occasion.
Leading up to the Rath Yatra, there will be several events planned for the devotees. For instance, on June 21, another offering will take place in the morning. This will be followed by a Jal Yatra from Ganesh Ashram on June 22 at 9:00 AM. The procession will be vibrant, with music and celebrations as the palanquin carrying the Lord moves through the city.
On the same day, at 11:00 AM, a special program called the Netrotsav will be held. This event is a tradition where the eyes of the deity are treated, symbolizing the restoration of the Lord’s eyesight. The devotees will offer various natural items like honey, ghee, and rose water to cool the deity’s eyes and provide comfort.
The following days will be filled with bhajan sessions and other cultural activities, including Garba dance on June 24. A significant ceremony, the Chaksu Unmilan, will take place on June 25, marking the Lord’s return to the temple after the celebrations.
The Rath Yatra itself will commence on June 27 after a series of pujas and a grand aarti. The procession will allow devotees to have a darshan of Lord Jagannath amidst music and festivities. It is expected to attract a large number of devotees, as the Rath Yatra is a revered event that holds spiritual significance for many.
The local authorities are working closely with the temple trust to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Safety measures are being put in place to prevent any disturbances during the procession. The district collector has assured the temple trust that all necessary support will be provided for a peaceful celebration.
