The Gandhinagar Local Crime Branch (LCB) has made a significant breakthrough by arresting four key members of the notorious interstate gang known as the ‘Khekda Gang’. This gang has been involved in the theft of metro line cables across several states in India, committing over 35 thefts in various cities. These cities include Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, as well as Delhi, Pune, Panvel, Bhopal, and Indore.
The gang’s activities were brought to light following an incident on June 2, during an IPL match. The gang members cut and stole 700 meters of cable worth ₹17.85 lakh near the Koba Metro station. Four teams from LCB-1 and LCB-2 began working together immediately after the incident. Using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, the LCB identified suspicious vehicles and traced them back to the suspects. The stolen cable was hidden in a rented house in Kalol.
In this case, the Gandhinagar police seized a total of ₹8.32 lakh worth of goods, including 368.7 kilograms of copper wire (valued at ₹2.95 lakh), plastic covers (worth ₹1,302), a Kia Carens vehicle, and mobile phones. During questioning, the arrested suspects revealed that a total of 13 individuals worked together to commit these crimes. They confessed to previous thefts at metro stations in Shahpur and Gyaspur, among others.
The gang admitted to stealing metro cables in 14 locations in Delhi, 12 in Pune, 6 in Panvel, and also in Bhopal and Indore. The suspects would travel to different cities, stay in hotels, rent houses, and use four-wheeled vehicles to scout areas near metro lines before cutting the cables. They would separate copper wire from the cables, pack it, and send it to Delhi by train.
The arrested individuals have been identified as 32-year-old Musharraf Mulejat, 21-year-old Rashid Dhobi, 45-year-old Rashid Ansari, and 33-year-old Irshad Malik, all originally from Uttar Pradesh. The police are conducting further investigations into the gang’s activities across the country. They are also in contact with metro management and police in other states to resolve the cases related to these thefts.
The ‘Khekda Gang’ has now been exposed, and the Gandhinagar police have successfully busted this cable theft racket. The gang was known for stealing cables from metro stations in Maharashtra, Delhi, and Pune. They would stay in cities where metro trains operate and carry out their thefts. The LCB has arrested four members of the gang and is continuing to investigate the extent of their crimes. The suspects have admitted to committing at least nine thefts. The police are taking these crimes seriously and are investigating whether other individuals were involved in this larger scheme.
