In Patan, a gang of thieves posing as passengers in auto rickshaws has been caught by the Local Crime Branch (LCB). Police arrested three individuals from Rajula, who were involved in stealing money and jewellery from unsuspecting passengers. The operation led to the recovery of stolen items worth ₹3,21,860, including gold ornaments and cash.
The police acted on a tip-off and reviewed CCTV footage, which showed a suspicious auto rickshaw with the registration number GJ27U9260. Officers apprehended two men and one woman at Harij. The suspects are identified as Kanubhai Bhikhabhai Solanki, Maheshbhai Dadubhai Solanki, and Shantuben, also known as Kantuben Shankarbhai Solanki. All three live in Rajula, Amreli.
The gang’s modus operandi involved tricking couples into sitting in their rickshaw. They would then steal valuables while the victims were distracted. In one incident, the gang stole a gold necklace weighing 24.73 grams, worth ₹2,07,360, along with ₹9,000 in cash and two mobile phones valued at ₹5,500. They also had the auto rickshaw, worth ₹1,00,000, seized by police.
Legal proceedings are underway against the arrested individuals. Police Chief V.K. Nayini stated that this crackdown is part of a larger effort to combat property-related crimes in the area.
This incident highlights the risks faced by passengers using auto rickshaws and the need for increased vigilance and safety measures. Authorities are urging passengers to be cautious and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.
The police are now working to identify and locate other potential victims of this gang. They have also advised the public to use trusted transport services and to remain alert during their journeys. Such incidents can cause distress and loss, and the community’s cooperation is essential in tackling crime effectively.
