The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) faced a significant issue during the first day of the Diploma Engineering Semester-2 exam. Students encountered serious problems with the Mathematics question paper, which led to widespread protests. The GTU responded by forming a committee to address the situation. This committee met on Thursday to discuss how to assist the affected students and to take action against the paper setter. They recommended awarding grace marks of up to 18 to students due to the errors in the exam paper.
The Diploma Engineering Semester-2 exams began on May 29. On the very first day, students found numerous mistakes in the Applied Mathematics paper. Reports indicated that there were errors in six to seven questions, causing confusion and distress among students. Concerns were raised that some students did not receive timely updates about corrections before the exam concluded at 1 PM. This led to complaints from students who felt they were treated unfairly.
Student organisations joined the protests, demanding grace marks for all affected students. In response to the uproar, GTU established a committee that included the Dean of the Diploma Faculty, two members from the Board of Studies, and two subject experts. Their task was to review the question paper thoroughly. During their meeting, which included the paper setter, the committee found multiple mistakes in the questions. Notably, it was found that two questions were worth 3 marks each and three questions were worth 4 marks each, which contributed to the committee’s decision to recommend grace marks.
