Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is set to offer a new postgraduate course in Electronics and Communication Engineering, focusing on VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) Design from the academic year 2025-26. This course aims to provide students with essential skills in semiconductor design and electronic systems. It will cover advanced technologies such as AI chips, IoT devices, smartphones, and automotive electronics, all built on VLSI platforms. A representative from the university mentioned that the course will give students a comprehensive understanding of both digital and analog integrated circuit (IC) design.
The introduction of this program aligns with the Indian Semiconductor Mission, which is expected to boost the demand for skilled VLSI professionals in India. Major companies, including Samsung, Google, Nvidia, EInfochips, Micron, and Tata Semiconductor, are anticipated to play significant roles in this expanding sector.
The curriculum of the VLSI Design course will include hands-on lab sessions, project-based learning, and guest lectures from industry experts. Students will also receive support for internships and job placements. An official from GTU stated, “Students will have the chance to secure internships, get jobs with leading multinational companies, or even start their own ventures.”
This course is a response to the growing needs of the electronics industry. With technology evolving rapidly, there is an increasing demand for qualified engineers in the chip design field. The program will emphasize practical experience using industry-standard tools and laboratories. It will prepare students for real-world challenges in designing complex ICs.
Students will gain hands-on experience with leading VLSI design tools like Xilinx, AMD, Cadence, Synopsys, and Mentor Graphics. The program also includes internships, industrial visits, and partnerships with global semiconductor companies to provide students with practical exposure to the industry.
The new postgraduate course at GTU is expected to open up numerous opportunities for students in the semiconductor industry and core electronics chip manufacturing. As the market for integrated circuits continues to grow, the course aims to equip graduates with the necessary skills to excel in this competitive field. With the constant advancements in technology, the need for innovative VLSI engineers is more critical than ever.
In addition to the VLSI Design course, Gujarat University (GU) is also preparing to conduct a PhD entrance exam on August 12. Over 700 seats will be available for aspiring PhD candidates. The application process will start on July 14 and continue until July 23, with a registration fee of ₹1,000. The entrance exam will last two hours and consist of 100 multiple-choice questions, split equally between general studies and the chosen subject.
These developments reflect the commitment of educational institutions in Gujarat to enhance technical education and meet the demands of the evolving job market. The introduction of specialized courses like VLSI Design demonstrates a proactive approach to preparing students for future career opportunities in technology and engineering fields.
