Gujarat Announces Dates for Panchayat Elections: Voting on June 22, Counting on June 25

The Gujarat State Election Commission has announced the dates for the long-awaited Panchayat elections. The elections will take place on June 22, 2025, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 25, 2025. This announcement was made by the State Election Commissioner, Dr. S. Murali Krishna, in Gandhinagar today. The official notification will be published on June 2, 2025, and candidates can submit their nomination papers until June 9, 2025.

In total, there are 8,326 Panchayats in Gujarat. Among these, 4,688 will have regular elections, while 3,638 will hold by-elections. The final voter list was published on May 27, 2025, marking the start of the election process, which is crucial for local governance in rural areas.

Notably, this election will use ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs). This decision comes after a period of Administrator rule in about 4,000 Panchayats for three years, with more than 1,400 Panchayats nearing the end of their term on June 30, 2025.

The announcement of the election dates brings relief to many, as it has been a long time since the last elections were held. Members of the legislative assembly, including Mayank Nayak, have urged voters to participate peacefully and ensure a harmonious atmosphere during the elections. The ruling party, BJP, has shown confidence in winning a significant number of seats, following a previous election where around 93% of the elected heads were from their party.

The Congress party has welcomed the announcement, having long demanded the restoration of elected representatives to the Panchayats. They argue that the current Administrator rule has deprived the citizens of their rights and led to allegations of corruption in several regions. The elections are expected to empower the rural population by restoring democratic governance.

Election preparations are already underway, with the State Election Commission holding review meetings with district collectors via video conference. This is to ensure that all necessary arrangements, such as polling stations and election staff, are in place for the elections.

The Panchayat elections are vital for local governance, as they allow villagers to elect their leaders, including Sarpanch (village head) and other members. The Panchayat system plays a crucial role in the development and administration of rural areas, addressing local needs and implementing government schemes.

With the elections approaching, the focus will be on ensuring transparency and fairness in the process. Voter education initiatives are also essential to encourage participation and inform citizens about their rights and responsibilities during the elections. The use of ballot papers is seen as a way to build trust in the electoral process, allowing voters to express their choices freely.

As the campaign season begins, candidates from various parties are preparing to engage with the community, sharing their visions for development and governance. The outcome of these elections will significantly influence the political landscape in Gujarat and impact the lives of thousands in rural communities.
