In recent days, Gujarat has been hit by unseasonal rain, affecting various districts from May 6 to May 10, 2025. This rain was accompanied by a strong cyclone, leading to significant damage. The brick manufacturers in the state, who operate about 2,500 large kilns and around 40,000 small hand kilns, have suffered an estimated loss of ₹450 crores. In light of this disaster, the state government has been urged to conduct a survey through the revenue department and provide assistance to those affected.
Devendra Bhai Prajapati, president of the federation, pointed out that the losses this year are even greater than those experienced during the cyclone ‘Tauktae’ in May 2021. That cyclone caused severe harm to brick manufacturers as well. With the recent weather events, the damage has escalated.
Additionally, the raw materials have been significantly washed away, and the production of bricks has been halted earlier than usual. During this period, many workers from other states arrived late, and with the rain causing early production stoppages, overall production has dropped by 40 to 45%.
The brick industry is not only vital for Gujarat but is also the second-largest employer after the railways in India, providing employment to millions. In Gujarat alone, this industry supports 7 to 8 lakh workers. Currently, the industry is almost completely shut down, resulting in the loss of livelihoods for many.
The federation has requested both the Gujarat and central governments to act urgently to support this critical industry before it collapses under the weight of repeated natural disasters and regulatory burdens. The industry is essential for the ongoing development of the state and the country, and it is crucial that sustainable solutions are found for its long-term survival.
Moreover, the federation has raised concerns about GST rates, which were increased from 5% to 12%. This change has further strained the industry’s stability. They have appealed to the government to revert these rates to their previous levels, highlighting that the brick industry has been a reliable source of revenue for the state.
Despite the challenges, the federation remains committed to working with the government to find solutions. They have also requested insurance coverage for losses due to natural disasters, similar to what is available for farmers facing crop failures. This would provide a safety net for brick manufacturers facing unpredictable weather conditions.
