Gujarat recently celebrated World Environment Day with a major tree plantation initiative. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the ‘Mission for Million Trees’ campaign in Ahmedabad. He planted a Sindoor sapling to mark the occasion. This campaign aims to increase the city’s green cover significantly. In the Chandlodia ward of Ahmedabad, a special area named ‘Sindoor Van’ will be established. It will feature 551 Sindoor trees, commemorating victims of a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Minister launched this initiative in memory of those lost in the attack, linking it to the ‘Operation Sindoor’.
During the event, the Chief Minister also presented bicycles to the winners of an environmental-themed drawing competition organised by the Air Quality Management Cell. This competition aimed to engage children in environmental conservation efforts.
The ‘Mission for Million Trees’ is part of a broader strategy to enhance Ahmedabad’s green cover. The municipal corporation aims to plant around 4 million trees in the city. To make tree planting accessible, they are sending ‘tree chariots’ to citizens’ homes for free planting. A toll-free number has been announced for residents to call and participate in this initiative. Additionally, the AMC service app allows people to get involved in the campaign.
This effort is expected to help reduce the city’s temperature and pollution levels. AMC is also creating oxygen parks across the city to increase green spaces. These parks contribute to the well-being of residents.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Mayor, local MPs, and municipal officials. They all shared a common goal of increasing green cover in the state. The Chief Minister highlighted that the campaign is not just about planting trees; it’s about creating a sustainable future for the next generations.
In recent years, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, various environmental initiatives have been launched across India. The ‘One Tree for One Name’ project is also part of this vision. It aims to plant 140 crore saplings nationwide. Gujarat has set a target of planting over 17 crore saplings by March 2025, showcasing its commitment to environmental conservation.
As part of this campaign, citizens, institutions, and local bodies are encouraged to participate actively. The state has already planted more than 17.48 crore trees under this initiative. The campaign also includes cultural forests, which blend environmental protection with cultural heritage.
Overall, the tree plantation drive on World Environment Day reflects Gujarat’s commitment to a greener future. The efforts of the government, along with participation from the community, are vital for achieving these ambitious environmental goals.
