On World Environment Day, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated 260 new vending machines that dispense cloth bags. This initiative aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags in Gujarat. The launch is part of the state’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.
In just 200 days since the introduction of bag ATMs, over 100,000 citizens have used cloth bags, demonstrating the success of this initiative. These machines are installed at various public places, including temples, hospitals, and markets. Currently, more than 20,000 cloth bags have been distributed from these machines.
The state government is promoting a ‘Plastic-Free India’ campaign, which includes making cloth bags available for prasadam at important temples like Somnath and Dwarka. Visitors can obtain cloth bags by inserting coins or scanning a QR code.
The Chief Minister emphasized that protecting the environment is crucial for everyone. He expressed gratitude for the support from the citizens and local authorities in this initiative. The government has also set up monitoring systems, such as the ‘Pratigya Live Dashboard’, which provides real-time data on the distribution of cloth bags.
The introduction of these vending machines not only helps in reducing plastic waste but also empowers women by sourcing bags from self-help groups. This initiative promotes both environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.
In addition to the cloth bag machines, paper bag vending machines have been installed in hospitals to further encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives. Chief Minister Patel’s leadership reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and a commitment to a greener future for Gujarat.
As part of the global effort, July 3 is celebrated as World Plastic Bag Free Day. The state aims to inspire other regions in India to follow suit and reduce reliance on plastic bags, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
