Ahmedabad’s Priyank Panchal, one of Gujarat’s most successful cricketers, has announced his retirement from all formats of first-class cricket. This announcement marks the end of a remarkable 17-year career. Panchal, who was a key player for Gujarat, has made significant contributions to the team, including captaining the India-A team.
Starting his first-class career in the 2008-09 season, Panchal played 127 matches and scored an impressive 8,856 runs. His achievements include 29 centuries and 34 half-centuries, displaying his consistent performance over the years. One of his standout performances was a remarkable score of 314 not out against Punjab in December 2016, which remains one of the highlights of his career.
Under Panchal’s captaincy, Gujarat won their first Ranji Trophy title in the 2016-17 season. He played a crucial role in the team’s success, contributing not just as a batsman but also as a leader. Throughout his career, he has been a reliable opener and has earned respect in Indian domestic cricket.
Panchal has also excelled in List A cricket, scoring 3,672 runs in 96 matches, with 8 centuries. In T20 format, he scored 1,522 runs in 59 matches. His leadership skills were evident as he captained Gujarat in 17 Ranji matches, winning 10 of them.
Despite his outstanding domestic career, Panchal never got the chance to debut for the Indian national team, although he was selected for the India-A side and was called up for the national team during a tour of South Africa in 2021, following Rohit Sharma’s injury. Unfortunately, he did not get to play in that series.
Expressing his emotions on social media, Panchal reflected on his journey and thanked his father for being his inspiration. He stated that his father’s dreams and support motivated him throughout his career. His retirement marks the end of an era for Gujarat cricket, with many acknowledging his dedication and contributions to the sport.
The Gujarat Cricket Association congratulated Panchal on his successful career and wished him well for the future. They praised his performance and leadership skills, noting that he has been a significant figure in Gujarat’s cricketing history.
As he steps away from the game, Panchal leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and passion for cricket. His achievements will inspire future generations of cricketers in Gujarat and beyond.
