The Gujarat government has finally announced an economic package aimed at helping unemployed gem artists. This announcement comes as the diamond industry faces a severe recession, particularly in the Banaskantha district where many artists work. The region hosts around 4,000 diamond factories employing approximately 20,000 artisans. However, due to the ongoing downturn in the diamond market, many artisans have been forced to look for alternative jobs.
In response to the situation, various organizations related to the diamond industry recently approached Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar. They urged him to take necessary action and provide an economic package to support the affected workers. On Saturday, Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi announced the package for unemployed gem artists.
Despite the government’s efforts, the Banaskantha Diamond Association criticized this package as misleading. They argue that it does not adequately address the needs of the artists. According to the package, the government will cover the education fees of gem artists’ children, up to ₹13,500 for one year. Additionally, small industries will receive a loan of ₹5 lakh with a 9% interest subsidy for three years, as well as relief from electricity duties for one year. However, these benefits are only available to small businesses with investments below ₹2.5 crore and those that have been involved in the diamond industry from 2021 to 2024. Moreover, only registered units before March 31, 2025, will be eligible for these benefits.
Amratbhai Fosi, president of the Banaskantha Diamond Association, expressed concerns about the package. He stated that while the government will deposit ₹13,500 for the education fees of one year, it raises questions about the definition of ‘unemployed.’ He pointed out that many artisans are receiving only 50% of their usual work, which does not classify them as unemployed according to the government’s criteria. This definition could leave many artists without the support they desperately need.
Fosi further explained that the package does not benefit artisans who have not taken loans from factories. He emphasized that the government should focus on providing direct assistance to each unemployed gem artist rather than relying on definitions that may exclude many from receiving help. The sentiment among artists is one of disappointment, as they feel that the government’s measures do not reflect their needs.
The diamond industry has been a significant source of income for many families in Gujarat. As the economic situation continues to decline, the hope is that the government will listen to the concerns raised by the diamond associations and make adjustments to the package. Many artisans are waiting for a more comprehensive solution that truly supports them during this difficult time.
