The Gujarat government has initiated a swift and effective disaster management response following a tragic plane crash involving an Air India flight. The accident occurred near Ahmedabad, where the plane was heading to London with over 200 people on board. As soon as the incident was reported, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered immediate action to assist victims and their families.
In a display of strong coordination, four IAS officers were assigned to guide and support the affected families at the Civil Hospital. Additionally, the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) deployed 16 deputy collectors and 16 mamlatdars to manage the situation. This comprehensive approach showcases the state’s commitment to effective disaster management.
Emergency services were mobilised quickly. Teams from the army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and fire brigades arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. Firefighters reached the crash site within three minutes and rescued over 30 individuals trapped in the wreckage. Using various firefighting equipment, they worked tirelessly to free passengers and provide medical assistance to the injured.
At the Civil Hospital, doctors and healthcare workers were on high alert, treating the injured as soon as they arrived. A green corridor was established to facilitate the rapid transport of victims to medical care. More than 100 ambulances were deployed to ensure that everyone received timely treatment.
As part of the response, the government set up a 24/7 control room at both the SEOC and the Civil Hospital. This centre provided continuous updates and assistance to the families of the crash victims, ensuring they had the necessary information and support. Additionally, accommodation and transport facilities were arranged for relatives visiting the hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also responded to the severity of the situation. They offered support to the Gujarat government and visited the crash site and hospital to oversee the rescue operations. Their presence highlighted the importance of government solidarity during such crises.
The Civil Hospital is one of the largest healthcare facilities in Asia, and it played a crucial role in the aftermath of the crash. Medical teams worked around the clock to care for the injured, with 50 people admitted to the hospital. Among them, 16 were treated as outpatients, while 31 required inpatient care. By the evening, several patients were expected to be discharged, indicating the efficiency of the medical response.
In addition to the immediate medical response, the government took steps to identify the deceased victims. DNA testing and blood samples were collected from relatives to confirm identities, with 219 family members already providing samples. A team of 36 experts was made available to assist in this process, ensuring that families received the necessary support during this difficult time.
The disaster management efforts have been praised as exemplary, showcasing the coordination between various government departments and emergency services. The involvement of IAS officers, healthcare professionals, and emergency responders demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting citizens and providing timely assistance.
