The Gujarat Home Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, recently held a special review meeting to discuss law and order in the state. This meeting aimed to address various issues, including the rising number of crimes. He commended the Gujarat police for their efforts in tackling drug-related cases, stating that they have doubled their efforts compared to previous years. During the meeting, it was highlighted that local police should also be proactive in filing cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Sanghavi praised the Gujarat Counter Terrorism Centre (GujCTOC) for successfully handling eight cases and arresting 77 accused individuals in just five months. The ongoing operations against anti-social elements were described as historic, and the Minister directed that a definitive strategy be developed for stricter actions against such elements.
The review meeting included top police officials, including the Director General of Police, Vikas Sahay, and the Principal Secretary of the Home Department, Nipu Toravane. The Minister expressed the need for senior officers to listen sensitively to complaints from victims of loan sharks and ensure their issues are resolved.
In relation to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Sanghavi acknowledged the police’s efforts in taking action against them. This included a concerted effort by GujCTOC, which has been involved in various operations over the past few months. The Minister noted that from January 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, there have been significant actions against illegal settlements, including the removal of 582 illegal encroachments and the cancellation of bail for 689 repeat offenders.
Furthermore, the home minister addressed the issue of loan sharks, stating that from January 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, 2,487 cases have been registered against them. The police have also conducted 641 loan melas to assist citizens. He stressed that local police stations must ensure there are no delays in registering First Information Reports (FIRs) against loan sharks.
Sanghavi’s review also touched on the honey trap crimes, indicating that from January 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, 296 accused have been charged with 66 cases related to such crimes. He instructed that strict action be taken against these crimes, emphasizing the need for a firm approach to tackle such issues.
The Minister’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to improving safety and security in Gujarat.
