The National Service Scheme (NSS) camp began at Gujarat Vidyapith, with Gujarat’s Governor Acharya Devvrat motivating youth to be agents of change. He urged the 40 lakh NSS volunteers across India, including 2 lakh from Gujarat, to take personal resolutions to contribute to society. This initiative is seen as a step towards a developed India. Governor Devvrat highlighted the importance of unity among diverse communities, especially in times of crisis, citing India’s response to the recent Pulwama attacks as an example of national solidarity. He encouraged the youth to engage in various social activities, such as tree planting, water conservation, and animal welfare, to empower families and communities.
The camp, organised in collaboration with various government departments and educational institutions, saw participation from youth across ten states and two union territories. The Governor launched a skill development programme during the event, emphasizing the need for practical education alongside academic learning. He also addressed the need for a healthy lifestyle, critiquing the fast food culture among youth and promoting traditional diets rich in nutritious home-cooked meals.
He warned about the environmental challenges we face today, including pollution of air, water, and land, and urged young people to adopt organic farming practices. This, he said, would safeguard human health and the environment. The Governor referenced the Prime Minister’s ‘One Tree, One Name’ campaign, inviting NSS volunteers to participate actively in service initiatives.
Gujarat Vidyapith’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Harshad Patel, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, stating that the NSS embodies the spirit of community service envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. He encouraged participants to contribute to the development of the nation, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed India by 2047.
The NSS camp includes thematic workshops, discussions, and cultural programs to promote unity in diversity. The event aims to inspire youth to embrace their roles as responsible citizens and contributors to society. The camp will continue until June 12, allowing participants to immerse themselves in Indian culture and values.
