The Gujarat High Court has given temporary relief to Asaram Bapu in a rape case. The court has extended his interim bail until July 7. The announcement came on June 27. Asaram is currently serving a life sentence for his involvement in a rape case. The bench, led by Justices Ilesh Vora and Sandeep Bhatt, heard the petition and decided to extend the bail granted on March 28 for three months. This extension was necessary since the previous bail was set to expire on June 30.
Asaram, aged 86, is in poor health. His lawyer requested this extension to submit necessary documents for the case. The next hearing is scheduled for July 2. The lawyer claimed that the process of obtaining an order from the Jodhpur High Court caused a delay of ten days, which impacted their preparation.
The court noted the specific facts of the case, especially the process of obtaining a certificate from the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The court decided to extend the interim bail to July 7 based on these circumstances. Previously, on March 28, the High Court granted Asaram three months of interim bail as the Supreme Court’s temporary bail was set to end on March 31.
A different bench of the High Court had given this decision. Asaram was convicted in January 2023 by a Gandhinagar court for the rape case. Additionally, he is serving life imprisonment for another case involving sexual assault of a minor girl in Rajasthan in 2013. In the current case, he was found guilty of raping a female follower from Surat multiple times between 2001 and 2006.
The court’s decision reflects the complexities involved in legal processes, especially in high-profile cases such as this. The extension of bail does not indicate a verdict on guilt or innocence. It simply allows for more time to prepare a defense. Asaram’s legal team continues to work on his case, hoping to present their findings in the upcoming hearing.
This case has drawn significant media attention due to Asaram’s status as a spiritual leader and the serious nature of the allegations against him. Discussions around his health and the implications of his age continue to be a focal point in the legal proceedings. Legal experts suggest that such extensions are not uncommon in complex cases where multiple documents and testimonies are involved.
Asaram’s followers remain a topic of discussion, with many expressing their support for him despite the serious charges. The upcoming hearings will likely continue to draw attention, as both legal and public opinions evolve.
The overall situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the justice system in dealing with high-profile cases. The public is keen to see how the next court session will unfold and what new developments may arise in Asaram’s legal battle.
