In a significant move to combat the misuse of narcotic drugs, Gujarat police have launched a statewide mega search operation. This initiative focuses on medical stores near schools, colleges, and educational institutions. The aim is to prevent the illegal sale of drugs and ensure public safety.
The operation began at noon under the guidance of Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi and Police Chief Vikas Sahay. Police checked 333 medical stores in Surat city alone. They seized 108 bottles of codeine syrup and five bottles of alprazolam from two stores. Legal action has been initiated against these establishments.
Similarly, in Valsad, police inspected 282 medical stores and registered 45 cases, including one under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This operation is crucial as it targets the sale of controlled substances without prescriptions. Many of these medicines, if misused, can lead to serious health issues.
During the checks, authorities focused on specific medications that are often abused. These include Amidopyrine, Phenacetin, Chloramphenicol, and Metronidazole, among others. Such medicines should only be sold with a doctor’s prescription. Their illegal sale poses a significant risk to health and society.
The operation involved collaboration between local police stations, the Local Crime Branch (LCB), and the Special Operations Group (SOG). Officers formed teams to conduct thorough inspections at medical stores. They particularly focused on areas near schools where the risk of drug misuse is higher.
By 4 PM on the same day, the teams had inspected numerous medical stores across various districts. In Patan district, 61 stores were checked, while in Navsari, 184 stores underwent inspection. Jamnagar and Bharuch districts saw 66 and 258 medical stores checked, respectively.
The comprehensive operation continues across all cities and districts in Gujarat. Authorities are determined to eliminate the illegal drug trade, which has been a growing concern in the state. The government has previously reported alarming statistics regarding drug seizures, indicating a widespread issue.
In the last three years, the Gujarat government seized over 21,061 crore worth of illegal substances, including a staggering amount of foreign liquor and various narcotics. The police have intercepted large quantities of heroin and other drugs, showing the extent of the drug crisis in the region.
This recent crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to protect public health and maintain safety in communities. Officials emphasize that the illegal sale of narcotics cannot be tolerated. They urge citizens to report suspicious activities related to drug sales to help combat this serious issue.
As this operation progresses, the government remains committed to ensuring that medical stores adhere to legal regulations. The aim is not only to reduce drug misuse but also to foster a safer environment for the youth of Gujarat. The police will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further action as necessary.
