Gandhinagar, Gujarat – As the monsoon season approaches, the Gujarat government is taking steps to ensure public safety and readiness. Chief Secretary Pankaj Joshi recently held a meeting with representatives from various departments and agencies to discuss the state’s disaster management plans. He emphasized the need for immediate activation of control rooms at state, district, and taluka levels. These control rooms will coordinate responses to potential disasters caused by heavy rains.
The Chief Secretary called for all departments to prepare their disaster management plans. They must ensure adequate supplies and resources are available for citizens in case of heavy rainfall or flooding. This proactive approach aims to prevent any loss of life during the monsoon season.
In the last 25 years, Gujarat has experienced average rainfall every year, allowing the state to manage weather changes effectively. This year, forecasts indicate that the region may witness 114% of average rainfall, while Saurashtra and Kutch could see as much as 119%.
During the meeting, Joshi expressed confidence in the state’s preparedness. He noted that coordination between state and central agencies has improved significantly. This coordination was instrumental in avoiding casualties during recent weather events, including the Biparjoy cyclone.
Officials have been instructed to assess areas that historically receive heavy rainfall. They need to make necessary preparations to mitigate potential damage. Additionally, inspections of old and risky buildings in urban areas are crucial to ensure safety. Residents of these buildings should be relocated before the monsoon begins.
Mock drills will be conducted in various locations to prepare for emergencies. Authorities will also collect data on water levels in dams like Sardar Sarovar and Ukai ahead of the monsoon.
The meeting also highlighted the availability of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. Gujarat currently has 15 NDRF teams and 11 SDRF teams ready for deployment as needed. These teams are equipped with boats, life jackets, and advanced communication tools.
The Central Meteorological Department has indicated that this year, the monsoon may arrive earlier than usual. Weekly updates on rainfall will be provided to keep the public informed.
The meeting involved senior officials from various departments, including revenue, energy, home affairs, irrigation, water resources, and urban development. This collaboration ensures a comprehensive response to any natural disasters that may occur during the monsoon season.
As the monsoon nears, the Gujarat government is focused on maximizing its preparedness to protect its citizens and minimize damage from potential floods or storms. With early planning and coordination, officials hope to ensure a safe and efficient response to the challenges the monsoon may bring.
