Gujarat Prepares for World Environment Day 2025 Celebrations

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5. This year, Gujarat has planned various activities to raise awareness about environmental protection and reduce plastic pollution. The celebration of World Environment Day 2025 will be supported by the Forest and Environment Minister, Mr. Mulubhai Bera, and State Minister, Mr. Mukesh Patel.

From May 22 to June 5, 2025, the Gujarat Environmental Management Institute (GEMI) in Gandhinagar will conduct the “WED 2025 Pre-campaign.” The aim of this campaign is to promote environmental safety and create more awareness in society about plastic pollution.

During this pre-campaign, GEMI will organise various activities across the state. These include beach clean-ups, street plays, online competitions, river clean-up drives, plastic waste collection drives, and a cyclothon. The events will lead up to the main celebration of World Environment Day.

An important aspect of this campaign is a cleanliness drive to free the coastline from plastic and other waste. Local officials, agencies, municipalities, and organizations will participate in this initiative. The cleanliness campaign will take place at various beaches. For example, on May 27, clean-up activities will be held at Mandvi and Madhavpur beaches, while on May 28, the focus will be on beaches in Umargam, Pingleshwar, Chowpati, Dwarka, and Shivrajpur.

In total, 53 street plays will be performed across cities including Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Junagadh, and Bhavnagar to convey the message of stopping plastic pollution. This will occur from May 23 to June 5, with performances in various locations.

To engage youth and students, online quizzes, essay writing, poster design competitions, reel video contests, and upcycling initiatives will take place from May 22 to May 30. Additionally, a cleanliness drive will be organized to clean the Mahisagar River from May 22 to May 24.

From May 26 to June 1, a plastic waste collection drive will be launched in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. This initiative will involve collecting plastic waste from households and societies. Furthermore, a cycling rally will be organized in collaboration with the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, allowing residents to participate actively.

On June 5, 2025, a closing ceremony will be held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. This event will start at 11:00 AM and will invite stakeholders, partners, volunteers, and winners of various competitions.

Overall, these activities aim to not only celebrate World Environment Day but also to significantly enhance public awareness regarding environmental issues and encourage community participation for a cleaner, greener Gujarat.
